Matthew Stafford Scouting Report
Much has been said about Stafford and his golden arm. He hails from the SEC, having started there since he was a freshman at Georgia. Not the most most accurate passer,
but is more than adequate. Tends to force throws into tight spaces, but that is due to his supreme confidence in his ability. Needs to work on his touch a bit, yet he excels at throwing deep passes where he can showcase his incredible arm strength. Did a heck of a job in the interview process during the combine. Decent mobility and has better than average pocket awareness. No known character issues. Ideal competitor. Needs to improve his decision-making. Top 10 talent.

Wow, there’s no questioning that arm strength, but your accuracy breakdown of Stafford shouldn’t be ignored either. I’ve seen a lot of comparisons that liken him to Matt Ryan, but Ryan wouldn’t have had the kind of success he experienced last year if it weren’t for the great job done by that Atlanta coaching staff. If handled correctly, I could see Stafford having a similar kind of impact in his first year, but it could also get pretty ugly if he’s placed into an unstable or ill-equipped system.
David–
That highlight video pretty much says it all for me with Stafford. Just look at the opponents and scores when all these highlights occur: a huge TD bomb when he’s up by 21 on Central Michigan, a successful third-down conversion when he’s down by 21 to Alabama. I’m going to try to look past that . . . but I’ve got a sinking feeling.

Well, you know me. Im not a proponent of drafting Stafford in our current predicament. But I think there is hope that he could be very good given we improve the o-line. I’d rather see us grab someone else, but Mayhew will have done his homework on whoever is chosen. And that is a comforting thought.
Nice observation on the score situations in that video. I never watched it closely enough to realize those things.
However, I dont buy the argument that there will be better QB’s next year. Stafford probably is more ready now than Bradford will be in a year’s time. I like Bradford’s accuracy, but he will take some time to adjust to a pro style offense.Besides, I want Taylor Mays next year!
If it’s me I’m not touching Stafford with a 10-foot pole on draft day. He’s not all that consistent and his arm isn’t as unbelievable as the scouts make it out to be. He has a good arm, probably yeah an above average arm but I don’t think it’s elite arm strength.
Plus I think he benefits from the fact that there isn’t another real quality QB in this draft. Mark Sanchez same thing (and I have a Pac-10 bias) I just don’t feel these two QBs are worth the first round type of hype that they are getting.
Way too risky to of a pick to draft a guy like Stafford #1 overall. Get yourself Jason Smith and build up the O-Line and go from there.
Hey man, I am with you on the dangers of drafting a QB. i would rather have an O-lineman, but Mayock thinks they will go with stafford, and he too is not keen on Stafford.
But I am confident that the Lions will have done their due diligence on the guy and will make an educated decision. Thats not to say they cant make a mistake, but they wont be jumping without looking.
